How AI Overviews Choose Which Accounting Firms to Cite

How AI Overviews Choose Which Accounting Firms to Cite? Google AI Overviews choose the accounting firms they cite in four moves. They run several related searches, pull pages from Google’s normal index, and filter them for quality and trust. Then they link the sources that best support each statement. Google has not published the exact formula. The best evidence shows that indexing, topic coverage, expert authorship and brand reputation all matter. A top-10 ranking helps, but it no longer guarantees a citation.

This guide collects the facts and figures that are available. It separates what Google says from what outside studies measured, because those two sources often disagree. It ends with a plan for accounting firms in the UAE.

What Are AI Overviews, and Are They Available in the UAE?

AI Overviews are short AI-written answers that appear above the normal results for some Google searches. They include links to the pages that support the answer. Google says they appear only when its systems judge them more helpful than classic results, so they often do not trigger.

Yes, they are available in the UAE. Gulf News reported on 22 May 2025 that AI Overviews had launched in the UAE. That followed Google’s 20 May 2025 announcement that the feature was going to more than 200 countries and regions. It supports more than 40 languages, including Arabic. Google’s separate AI Mode, a conversational tab, launched in English across the Middle East and North Africa in August 2025. It reached Arabic on 8 October 2025, as one of 36 added languages. Google’s Arabic announcement does not list countries, so confirm UAE access by testing it.

The audience is large. Coverage of Google I/O on 19 May 2026 reports that AI Overviews reached 2.5 billion monthly users and AI Mode passed 1 billion. I could not confirm those two numbers on a Google page, so treat them as reported figures.

How Do AI Overviews Pick Their Sources?

What Google Says About Source Selection

  • Eligibility: a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google states there are “no additional technical requirements”. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.
  • Query fan-out: AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics and data sources while writing a response. Google says this lets it show a wider range of links than classic Search.
  • Grounding: Google describes its AI features as built on its core ranking and quality systems, using retrieval-augmented generation. In plain terms, the model looks up pages first and writes from them.
  • Different models: AI Overviews and AI Mode can use different models and techniques, so their links can differ.
  • No special schema: Google says structured data is not required for generative AI search and that no special schema.org markup exists for it.
  • No llms.txt: Google says it ignores llms.txt files, AI-specific files and special Markdown for Search.
  • No chunking: Google says you do not need to split content into small pieces, and that there is no ideal page length.
  • Content quality: Google asks for unique, first-hand, “non-commodity” content. Its guide warns against recycling what others have already said.
  • Scaled pages: creating many pages for query variations or fan-out queries to manipulate results breaks Google’s scaled content abuse policy.

The Process in Five Steps

Google does not publish a step-by-step ranking recipe, and no outside tool can see inside it. Google says so directly. The five steps below are a plain-language summary of Google’s public descriptions, not a leaked formula.

  1. Understand the question. The system reads the full query, which in AI Mode is often two to three times longer than a normal search, according to Google.
  2. Fan out. It splits the question into subtopics and runs many searches at once.
  3. Retrieve. It collects candidate pages from the index. Only indexed, snippet-eligible pages can appear.
  4. Filter. Quality systems and spam systems remove weak pages. For health and finance topics, Google says YMYL queries meet “an even higher bar” and that it may withhold an overview when reliable information is scarce.
  5. Link. It attaches supporting links to the statements in the answer.

Why Citations Change So Often

Citations shift when Google changes its models. SE Ranking found that after the Gemini 3 upgrade (reported from 27 January 2026), about 42% of previously cited domains were replaced, and responses cited about 32% more source URLs. ALM Corp reported these figures, so they are second-hand. Treat any citation you win as temporary and keep earning it.

How Often Do AI Overviews Appear for Finance and Accounting Searches?

It depends on the type of search. Informational questions trigger overviews often. Searches where someone wants to hire a firm rarely do.

Ahrefs analysed 146,122,391 desktop results from September 2025. AI Overviews appeared on 20.5% of them.

Search typeAI Overview rateNotes
Informational21.4%99.9% of overview-triggering keywords were informational
Commercial4.3%Searches like “best accountant”
Transactional2.1%Searches where someone wants to buy or hire
Navigational0.9%Brand-name searches
Question searches57.9%Against 15.5% for non-questions

YMYL overall34.3%Against 17.2% for non-YMYL
Financial YMYL22.9%Medical YMYL was highest at 44.1%

Longer searches trigger overviews more often. Ahrefs found rates of 9.5% for one-word queries, 14.0% for three words, 27.6% for five words, 36.6% for six words and 46.4% for seven words or more.

Other finance data gives a wide range. Semrush reported that 7.78% of finance keywords triggered an overview in November 2025. BrightEdge, as reported by Search Engine Land, found coverage of finance topics climbing between May 2024 and December 2025. Tax planning went from 0% to 63%, financial planning from 6% to 73%, credit and debt from 5% to 62%, and cash management from 13% to 79%. BrightEdge also found low coverage for stock tickers (7% to 8%) and finance calculators (9% to 11%). These sources use different keyword sets, so the figures do not match, and none states a UAE sample.

What this means for you: a search like “accountant near me in Sharjah” mostly returns the map pack and organic listings. A search like “when is the UAE corporate tax return due” is much more likely to return an AI Overview. Plan content for both. See our guide on local SEO for accountants for the first and use the tax guides below for the second.

Does a Top-10 Ranking Get Your Firm Cited?

Ranking still matters, but less than it did. The studies disagree on how much, mostly because they measure different things.

StudyDateSampleFinding
AhrefsJuly 2025About 1.9 million citations76% of cited pages ranked in the top 10. Median position of top-cited pages was 4.
AhrefsEarly 2026863,000 results, about 4 million cited URLs37.1% in the organic top 10 (38% counting the first 10 result blocks), 26.2% ranked 11 to 100, 36.7% outside the top 100.
Originality.aiNov 2025Not reported48% of citations ranked in the top 100. Of those, 52.5% were in the top 10. Cumulative share: top 1 is 8.0%, top 3 is 20.7%, top 5 is 31.5%, top 20 is 77.9%.
seoClarityNot stated432,000 keywords97% of overviews cite at least one top-20 page. Position-1 pages appeared more than 50% of the time.
BrightEdgeOct 2025 and Feb 2026Not statedTop-10 overlap of 54% in October 2025 and about 17% in February 2026.
BrightEdge (finance)Latest reportedNot statedTop-10 overlap of 11.3%, up from 7.6%. 65.7% of finance citations came from pages outside the top 100, down from 82.0%.

Why do the numbers swing from 76% to 17%? Three reasons stand out. First, Ahrefs says it improved its data parsing after July 2025, so part of the drop may reflect better measurement. Second, query fan-out means Google cites pages that rank for the sub-questions, not only the headline query. Third, model changes such as Gemini 3 reshuffled sources. ALM Corp offers fan-out and Gemini 3 as likely causes, but Google has not confirmed them.

The safe reading is this. A first-page ranking raises your odds. Originality.ai puts the chance of citation for a page-one result at about 38%. But roughly half of citations come from pages that do not rank in the top 100 for the main query, so ranking for the head term alone is not enough. Cover the sub-questions too.

What Do Cited Pages Have in Common?

Where the Answer Sits on the Page

CXL mapped 100 Google AI Overview citations to the place their snippet sat on the source page. In total, 55 came from the first 30% of the page. Of those, 21 came from the first 10% and 27 from the 10% to 20% band. Another 24 came from the middle (30% to 60%) and 21 from the bottom 40%. Several bottom-of-page citations came from FAQ blocks. The sample is small, so treat it as a pattern, not a rule.

Kevin Indig analysed 18,012 verified ChatGPT citations and found 44.2% came from the first 30% of a document. That study is about ChatGPT, not Google.

Google says chunking is unnecessary. Both facts fit together. Writing the answer first is good editing, and readers benefit. You do not need to cut articles into artificial pieces.

Length

Ahrefs studied 174,048 pages and 560,346 AI Overviews. Word count had a correlation of 0.04 with citation, which is effectively none. Cited pages averaged 1,282 words, and 53.4% were under 1,000 words. Write as long as the question needs.

Format and Media

YouTube is the most-cited domain in AI Overviews, according to Ahrefs. It made up 5.6% of all citations, and its share rose 34% over six months. It supplied 18.2% of citations that came from outside the top 100. Google also tells site owners to add high-quality images and video to support text. A short video that explains a tax deadline gives you a second way to be cited.

Structured Data

Google says structured data is not needed for AI features. SE Ranking found that about 65% of pages cited in AI Mode include some structured data. That shows the two often appear together, not that schema causes citations. Add schema that matches your visible page, because it helps normal search, but do not expect it to win citations on its own.

Do Brand Mentions and Links Affect Citations?

Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in May 2025. It kept domains with a Domain Rating above 40 and a top keyword with at least 800 monthly searches. Then it compared each factor with how often the brand appeared in AI Overviews.

FactorCorrelation with AI Overview mentions
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors (links that use the brand name)0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Referring domains0.295
Branded traffic0.274
Backlinks0.218
Number of pages on the site0.170

Brands in the top quartile for web mentions had a median of 169 AI Overview mentions. The bottom quartile had a median of 0. Ahrefs stresses this is correlation, not cause, and that about 26% of the brands it started with had no mentions and were left out.

Google adds a warning. Its May 2026 guide says AI features do surface what others say about a brand. But it says seeking artificial mentions “isn’t as helpful as it might seem” and that its spam systems block such efforts. Earn mentions through real work: speaking, published expert commentary, genuine reviews, professional body profiles and press.

How Does Google Treat Finance and Tax Content?

Google applies a higher standard to finance. Its documents say YMYL queries meet “an even higher bar” for reliable support. Overviews may tell people when expert advice matters, and spam filtering applies to them. An overview appears only when Google has high confidence in its quality. Google may withhold one where reliable information is scarce.

For an accounting firm, that is an opening. Google wants expert sources. Pages with a named, credentialed author, a dated update and clear sourcing look like the sources it needs. Anonymous, undated tax advice looks like the opposite.

UAE Tax Facts That Overviews Are Likely to Quote

These are the questions your clients ask, and the facts that a good page should state clearly with a source. All figures below come from 2026 secondary sources (ClearTax and Kayrouz and Associates) and from standard UAE rules. Check each one against tax.gov.ae and mof.gov.ae before you publish.

What Happens to Clicks When an AI Overview Appears?

Clicks fall. Three studies agree on the direction and disagree on the size.

Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords, half with an overview and half without, using Search Console data from December 2023 and December 2025. For position 1, click-through rate with an overview fell from 7.3% to 1.6%. Informational keywords without an overview fell from 7.6% to 3.9% over the same two years. Ahrefs puts the overview effect on position 1 at about 58%, and calls it a correlation. Its earlier April 2025 figure was 34.5%.

Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults and 68,879 Google searches in March 2025. People clicked a result link on 8% of visits with an AI summary, against 15% without one. They clicked a link inside the summary on 1% of visits. They ended the session after 26% of visits with a summary, against 16% without. A summary appeared on 18% of the searches Pew studied.

Seer Interactive, reported via Search Engine Land, found organic click-through with an overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61% in September 2025, and paid click-through fell from 19.7% to 6.34%.

Google argues the clicks that remain are better. It says visitors from pages with AI Overviews tend to be more engaged and stay longer, but it gives no figure. I found no UAE-specific click data. All the studies above use mainly US or global samples.

What this means for you: measure enquiries, not only visits. An accounting firm needs a booked consultation, not a pageview. Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form leads, and judge SEO by those.

What Should a UAE Accounting Firm Do to Get Cited?

Google’s May 2026 guide says that optimizing for AI features is still SEO. So the plan below is mostly good SEO, with a focus on the questions overviews answer.

1. Get the Basics Right

  • Confirm every key page is indexed and shows a snippet. Check the URL Inspection tool in Search Console.
  • Do not block Googlebot in robots.txt or at your host or CDN.
  • Make important content real text, not images or PDFs.
  • Fix mobile speed. Google lists mobile-friendly design, fast load and a clear main content area as page experience basics.
  • Do not use nosnippet or a low max-snippet value on pages you want cited. Google says tighter limits reduce visibility in AI results.

2. Cover the Whole Question, Not Just the Keyword

Fan-out means one question becomes several searches. A page that answers the follow-ups can be pulled in for any of them. Take the question “How do I register my Dubai company for corporate tax?” A good page also answers:

  • How does EmaraTax registration work, step by step?
  • Which documents does a company need?
  • What is the registration deadline for my licence date?
  • What is the penalty for late registration (AED 10,000)?
  • Does a free zone company still need to register?
  • Who qualifies for Small Business Relief?
  • Do I need a registered tax agent?

Put each answer under its own question heading. Lead with the answer, then explain.

3. Write a Model Answer First

Here is the pattern. The question is the heading. The answer comes in the first two sentences. Then details follow.

Example. Q: When is the UAE corporate tax return due? A: A company must file its corporate tax return nine months after the end of its financial year, through the EmaraTax portal. For a 31 December 2025 year end, that is 30 September 2026. Late filing costs AED 500 a month for the first 12 months, then AED 1,000 a month. Confirm the current rules at tax.gov.ae.

4. Show Real Expertise

  • Add a byline with credentials, such as CPA, ACCA or FTA Registered Tax Agent, and link it to a profile page.
  • Have a qualified accountant review every tax article, and show the reviewer and the date.
  • Add first-hand detail: anonymised client cases, common filing mistakes you see, and what you would do differently. Google asks for non-commodity content that goes beyond what is already online.
  • Show your licence number, office address and phone number. Keep them identical to your Google Business Profile.

5. Build a Real Reputation

  • Ask clients for Google reviews right after delivering a result. Never offer discounts for them.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete: categories, services, hours, WhatsApp number and photos. Google names Business Profile as the tool for local information in AI responses.
  • Earn mentions: contribute expert comments to UAE business media, speak at chamber of commerce events and keep profiles on professional body sites.
  • Publish a short explainer video on YouTube for each major deadline.

6. Add Arabic Where Your Clients Search in Arabic

Overviews support Arabic, and AI Mode reached Arabic in October 2025. A client in Sharjah, Ajman or Fujairah may ask in Arabic. Create Arabic pages written by a native speaker, link them to the English versions with hreflang tags, and keep the facts identical.

7. Keep Content Fresh and Dated

Rules change often. Review each tax page every quarter. Show the update date. Replace expired figures, such as references to Small Business Relief after 31 December 2026.

What Not to Do

  • Do not spend time on llms.txt, AI-only files or special Markdown. Google ignores them.
  • Do not cut articles into small fragments for AI. Google says it is unnecessary.
  • Do not pay for fake mentions. Google says its spam systems block them.
  • Do not publish dozens of near-identical emirate or fan-out pages. Google calls that scaled content abuse. Build a page only where you have real clients, real detail and a reason to exist.
  • Do not treat schema as a shortcut. Add FAQPage, Service and Organization schema that matches visible text for normal search, and expect no special AI boost.
  • Do not trust tools that claim to see Google’s internal AI metrics. Google says no third-party tool has that access.

How Do You Check Whether Overviews Cite Your Firm?

  1. Use Search Console. Google says sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode count toward the normal Web performance report, and its guide points to a Generative AI performance report. Verify your site and open it.
  2. Build a test list of 25 to 30 searches. Include questions (tax deadlines, VAT registration), emirate searches and the same searches in Arabic.
  3. Run each search from a UAE connection and a mobile phone. Record whether an overview appears and which sites it cites.
  4. Log the result in a sheet with the date, the query, whether an overview showed, whether you were cited and who was.
  5. Repeat monthly. Citations change quickly, and a single check proves little.
  6. Compare enquiries from search before and after changes. Calls, WhatsApp clicks and forms matter more than citation counts.

What Is Still Unknown?

  • The exact weight of each signal. Google has not published it.
  • How much of the 76% to 17% swing in top-10 overlap is real and how much is better measurement.
  • UAE-specific citation and click data. I found none in English or Arabic.
  • Whether the I/O 2026 user counts will hold up. They come from secondary coverage.
  • How Gemini model updates will reshuffle sources next. The January 2026 upgrade replaced a large share of cited domains.

FAQs About AI Overviews and Accounting Firms

How do AI Overviews decide which accounting firms to cite?

They run several related searches, pull indexed pages, filter for quality and trust, and link sources that support each statement. Google has not published the exact signals. Evidence points to ranking for related questions, expert authorship, clear answers and brand reputation.

Do I need to rank in the top 10 to be cited?

No, but it helps. Ahrefs found about 38% of cited URLs ranked in the top 10 in 2026, against 76% in July 2025. Originality.ai found about 38% citation odds for page-one results. Many citations come from pages outside the top 100.

Do I need special schema, llms.txt or AI files?

No. Google says there is no special schema, that llms.txt is ignored and that no extra technical requirement exists. Use structured data that matches your page for normal search, but do not expect it to cause citations.

Will an AI Overview cost me clicks?

Probably, on searches where one appears. Ahrefs measured a 58% lower click-through at position 1. Pew measured 8% clicks with a summary against 15% without. Google says the remaining visitors are more engaged. Track enquiries, not just visits.

Do local searches like “accountant near me” show AI Overviews?

Rarely. Ahrefs found overviews on 7.9% of local searches, against 22.8% for non-local ones. Those searches mostly return the map pack, so keep your Google Business Profile complete and your reviews active.

Do AI Overviews work in Arabic and in the UAE?

Yes. AI Overviews launched in the UAE in May 2025 and support Arabic. AI Mode reached Arabic on 8 October 2025. Test your own searches, because the rollout varies by query.

How can I tell if my firm is being cited?

Check the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, then run a monthly manual test of 25 to 30 searches and log the results. Do not rely on tools that claim access to Google’s internal metrics.

How long does it take to get cited?

No reliable timeline exists. Pages must be indexed first, and Google says meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion. Expect weeks to months, and expect citations to change as models update.

Key Takeaways

  • Google says there is no special optimization for AI Overviews. Strong SEO, unique expert content and snippet eligibility come first.
  • Informational tax questions trigger overviews far more than “near me” hiring searches. Run two strategies: content for questions and local SEO for hiring.
  • A top-10 ranking raises your odds but does not decide them. Answer the related sub-questions too.
  • Brand mentions correlate strongly with visibility (0.664 in Ahrefs data), but fake mentions do not work.
  • Clicks fall when an overview appears, by 58% at position 1 in Ahrefs data. Measure enquiries.
  • Finance content faces a higher bar. A named, credentialed, dated author is your strongest advantage.
  • Test monthly. Citations change often.
